Thesis Inquiry
Introduction

Metaverse Exhibition
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, the possibilities for its applications in the digital world are limitless. One such application is in the metaverse, a virtual space where people can interact with each other and digital objects in real-time. VR has the potential to create entirely new experiences for people in the digital world, and my thesis presentation in the metaverse provides a unique insight into its potential impact.

Form & Inquiry
Since my thesis is related to technology and artificial intelligence and technology, I decided to present my thesis in form of metaverse exhibition using my fictional character. The presenation launches in dual ways - presentation in both virtual and physical world in person. The incentive for the medium I choose is to illustrate how technology has transformed the way we live and the concept and "duality" since the metaverse technology, AR/ VR, and artificial intelligence are starting to create an unpredictable world in an invisible way that we have not realized - the virtual from web 3.0 with digital robotics and fictional characters. The overall theme of the presentation is about the journey of myself getting interested in the field of AI and technology.

Designers do not only serve as medium of information or a part of the chain of need-to-demand in capitalism and the monological, top-down model of culture; our essential role, to create difference among the uniformities, has been forgotten as we overly focus on on the lagacy of the formers that forzen our aesthetic style and methodology of creation. Graphic design as we know has reached its maturity after hundred years of deveopment since the modern era, roughly the late 1800s. There is still room for development in aesthetics, we should not worried about overly pushing styles since there is a pendulum swing in graphic design, accorinding to the Hegelian theory. As the field of design is becoming more saturated, we should rethink of the possibilities and potentials for different methodologies, utilizing alternative tools to might generate novel outputs. Digging a little deeper into the relationship between technology and graphic design, artificial intelligence, or AI, has became the signal for future development, and it is the starting point of my research.
My research is going to approach AI technology in two ways. The first approach is to reinforce the human interaction with design and technology and immersiveness of designers’ works, which the quality of information becomes perceptible only when the senses are being mobilized. The second approach is to analysis the process of AI training and its database, since understanding the formation of database is important to determine the outcome as we incorporate with tools.
Technological process should be criticized and encouraged with understandings. Learning AI, analyzing its databse, and exploring new technologies are the starting points of my research. Looking into the boarder scale of the relationship between human and AI, AI has an inextricable connection with sensory experience, immersiveness and interaction, quality of imformation, the Metaverse, and the creation of art, typography, and other visuals in graphic design, and those fields can be categorized as design and user experience.

Hi, everyone. Thanks for attending my thesis inquiry. To begin with the presentation, I would like to ask everyone a few questions.
Technology. What appears in your mind when you think of technology? Please take a few seconds to make a mental note.
How about artificial intelligence? What are some impressions and stories you have? Please take another few seconds to think about it.
I believe more than 80% of you have negative connotations with this word. We are more comfortable and familiar with the word technology. The definition of AI is a computer system able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, and decision-making. There are common fears toward AI and the unknown future around this topic, such as the fear of humans being substituted by AI and the fear of the losing meaning of human existence as AI becomes more prevalent. How can we re-examine the our relationship between machine and human? Now, I am going walk you through the creative partnership between machine and us from my perspective.
My name is David. A second-year graduate student in BU graphic design. I used to study law and economy, but for the reason of personal interest in exploring aesthetics, I decided to study fashion design at the beginning of my college. Fashion design is a field that has all the possibilities.
Here was the show from Moschino, Spring 2021, in which Moschino used puppets as substitutions for human models. I started to think about that what if other brand imitate this, using robots instead. Would that work better only showing the human body shape without factors of human appearance and personality, leaving the essence of the spirit of clothing?
I did more research about the role of AI behind the scene, it is evidenced by popular fashion brands to use AI in their business models, such as the usage AI chatbots, personalisation, or trend forecasting. Here is a model who is generated entirely by AI, Miquela Sousa, who has 3.1 million followers on Instagram. During the pandemic, brands were often unable to bring models for photoshoots, which posed a serious issue as model shots can make items up to 60% more likely to sell.
I really enjoy the process of creation and exploration. However, my hand craft was poor, which it is not suitable to create fashions. After listening to a guest lecture from Roderick MartinezI, my future graphic design professor, I decided to transfer my major with great determination. I had no idea about graphic design, but I felt more comfortable working in digital space in the digital world.
There are three layers of meanings for the term “digital world” in my understanding. The first layer of is creations with technologies like computer and laptop, which is different from analog design. The second layer is related to what is called "computer accent" that we can feel certain contend are not generated by the hands of human but AI with from its database. The last layer is related to NFTs (digital properties) and the Metaverse, in which humans and AI together create a digital world and digital properties that are not tangible, which is a parallel version of the physical world.
Most designers are comfortable working within the first layer of the digital world. I had work projects graphically for years, never thought of using alternative technologies as experimentation. Here is a futuristic UI/UX interface I designed in my undergraduate program, which is an app that can utilize AI technology to detect that health statistics, nutrition level, and even the emotion and feelings of your pet.
I gradually found out that, especially in the field of graphic design, that I could explore a lot of experimental works, and the audience could just be myself, not the market. More importantly, I started gaining the ability and ideas to shape my audience’s perspectives and evoke their sensory experience with my design and style using technologies and mediums.

Exploring the sensory technologies and creative applications of AI is no longer a new ideas for us. I have seen technologies such as AR/VR, kinects, and AI either inside or outside of the design program. This was a workshop from an Italian artist invited by Professor James. He uses kinects technologies to create a space that evokes interactive user experience and body movements. The next image is an example of communicative installation, which translates human languages into recognizable forms and creates a space for conversation between human and AI.
In my structure & morphology project, I visualizes and transform the movie, the Legend of 1900, into a physical form, which is a collection of interactive gelatine artwork that connects with a touch board. When users can touch and feel the texture on the artwork, the music that I created for the movie themes will automatically plays.
I think many of you have already think about music visualization, but how about graphic sonification? Here is the painting from Henri Matisse. For the second project in this semester, I work on translating painting into music through CMYK data collection, generating graphs, and using AI developer tools to translate data and graphs into music, which is a sensory experience through technology that allows people who cannot see to listen and feel the visuals.

“We act as both teachers and curators, training our student (AI) to identify objects based on information from the datasets that have been pre-selected.”
This image is showing Book.AI created by Barney McCann, which more precisely, his artificial intelligence. AI creates from typefaces, which called Obsoletes, to all the drawings that are based on database ranged from landscape images to natural patterns. This image shows a robot (Littlebots) writing with its hands, imitating human hand writings, which is terrifying to most people. If AI is fully developed, what is the difference between them and us? That next image is a sound-sensible automatic car from Tesla, which it understands and is able to learn from the languages from its owner. It can even have conversations with people.
Artificial Intelligence does not only limit to physical forms. It could be around us but we never realize it. Even the translator we use is a form of AI that it has the function of language recognition. My thesis direction is to investigate the creative partnership between human and machine.
So, I come up with a chart that summarizes my areas of interest for future research in technology. In this case, I am going to focus on AI technology as the starting point of my inquiry, examining its relationship with the digital world, and ultimately, its relationship with humans in the process of creation. Here are some questions for my inquiry.
What are some explorations of alternative relationships between human and technology in the process of creation?
How can we improve the quality of information created or received with support of artificial intelligence and technology?
Or, how does technology mobilize sensory organs for better understanding of information and more immersive experience?
How can we train AI in a more efficient, appropriate, and safer that benefits human-kinds?
At which point AI development has to be stop, and how do we differentiate AI and us if it reaches a point that it is being finalized?
Thank you all for listening.
:)
